Absolutely love pictures, absolutely love my dad

RockYou slideshow | View | Add Favorite

Found this really cool site on how to create slide shows from your photo collection from blog surfing. Kudos to Junming! Super amazing! He's got such creative ideas to edit his pictures and made it all so high tech...:P

Well, I absolutely love taking pictures...would always remember my father teaching me how to take pictures, how to choose the correct lenses and lighting and its my dream if I have got the moolah get the conventional cameras with filters la...:)can take beautiful shots wor!My dad is one who inspires me most on phototography..i am still a novice la as compared to many ppl...want to learn how to capture moods, expressions and people, love nature also, especially sunsets...But I would remember the days when I was young when I would sneak into my dad little "dark room" to play with all his developing tools and liquids haha..My dad was a professional photographer who had won international awards waaaaaay back into the 1970s...these days he would only talk fondly of all his achievments la...

He would let me play with his cameras, learning how to set up all the tripods and to stare through the viewer of all his expensive cameras, some Leica ones, the Nikon ones his favourites and of course the Pentax ones....if you all can remember cameras of the past were big black or silver with the "chic-chak" sound when you want to snaps pics....remnants of these gems can be found in Peninsula Plaza i think...of course...i spoilt a lot of his precious...:( those days we were not very well off so those cameras really cost him a fortune. he never once blamed me for those, in fact, he helped me to hold a camera and to learn how to focus, and all the technical terms, "over and underexposed", "filtering" , how to choose lens sizes..what do all the 35-150mm meant....

I am thankful to the Lord for blessing me with such a loving father, who spent hours day on day teaching me and nurturing me the way I am... I would always remember all the childhood days spent out at the beaches, fishing and playing in the sun, stepping into waist-high deep mangrove swarms to catch fish, hahah I got my cheekiness and my stature from his side of the family!! He's a good storyteller you know, and my bedtimes are filled with his wonderful stories of Chinese History and mystical creatures, he got me so in love with reading that it really helped me in my decision also to desire to be a good teacher.

Have learnt in yesterday's class that a young child needs to be read to at least 2-3 times a day in order to be able to master language and be a good reader when he/she goes to primary school.

Lord Jesus, I am so blessed with such loving parents. Help me to show love and grace to them as my family members. Help me to cherish the times that i can spend with them. Help me to make the most out of everytime i have with them. Lord, I love them and I commit their salvation in Your hands!

"Let Love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them in the tablet of your heart." ~Proverbs 3:3

Pictures from the National Day Parade Preview 29th July

Fireworks display taken from where I was sitting cool hor?

This is my very first NDP that I went and attended at the National Stadium, the very last one before they are to pull it down for the Singapore Sports Hub. Very sad lei, this stadium has many memories for me too. Remember that my primary school was Ai Tong Primary School and Sports Day for us every year was a huge affair.

We always hold the Sports Day as Five Schools Combined Sports meet cos we are all under the Hokkien Huay Kuan and its really a big affair cos then the various schools will compete each other fiercely to see which school would emerge tops. My school Sports tee was red, so it was pretty outstanding. My principal had cheered for me when I was running around the track for my "400m C girls" race! I still had my Shot Put trophies also!! :P The guest of honour then was the UOB Chairman, Wee Cho Yau!

Oh yea, anyone out there went to watch the Malaysia Cup at the National Stadium? hhahah I did! Those days the Kallang Wave was so fun! The stadium will be packed to the full as people supported the Singapore Lions..oh yeah that year they lost to the Pahang Team...:P

Dear all its a fallacy, let me explain to those friends over the years who think I would have free passes to go to National Day Parade because of my birthday..well....Nooooooo...I was kiddish lah, actually wanted to drag my whole family to go with me, but my parents being teachers had already been tasked to bring kids to National Stadium every SINGLE YEAR! So I balloted online and got the Preview tickets just like that..so exciting...4 in all...

Managed to get Sarah, Florence Neo, Mingzhu and me down. I was so excited wor that I sms-ed them and made them wear red and all. Kallang MRT was flooding with people that TP had to block out the roads so that the people could cross the roads to the Stadium!! Let the pics do some talking...:p

This Stadium...part of my growing up years also...will cease to exist soon...sigh...

When my birthday approaches...

When this time of the year approaches...my life seems to slow down...and its true people sink into more "reflective" mood, What have I done? What have I not done for the past year? Could it be any better?

At this point of time, you realise that there are some things that keep reminding you that you are old enough even though you try ways and means to mask it...

I know I am getting older and a 70's baby when:

1) I can relate to Class 95 FM Love Songs and some old Chinese Songs:- I find myself singing along to the songs that they played at night! Oh dear....Depeche Mode, Whitney Houston, Simply Red, Bee Gees, Simon and Garfunkel, Sting, Guns and Roses, Richard Marx ..just to name a few...for the Chinese, it will be haha , "Xiao2 Hu3 Dui4", "Wang Jie", Wu Shi Kai, Chen Shu Hua, Qi Jin and Qi Yu....

2) I get tired easily and can't really stay up late like I used to :- I find myself feeling extremely sleepy at 11pm! My hostel days were madness, I could go on without sleep for two days in a row! My muscles start to ache like crazy when its simple exercises like walking and climbing stairs....

3)I can totally relate to Pastor Ben:- when he mentioned the old 80's movie, "The Gods must be crazy". It talks about this African man who found a glass coke bottle which fell from the sky and the whole tribe worshipped the bottle as it was a gift from the gods.
The show actually did a few sequels after that, the Gods Must be Crazy part 2, the lead African tribal man, Nixau actually came to Hong Kong and did two more films because of the show's popularity, one with Carina Lau and the other with the departed Chinese Ghostbuster "Lin Zhen Ying" think some of you can remember him as always a Taoist Priest. Sadly both Mr Lin and Nixau had since passed on.

4) I realised that my conversations had more sentences started with, "in the past", ..."last time"..."Do you remember..."

5) I actually starting to miss being in the 80's in fact, Growing up in the 80's.

6)That day at Church Camp while we had Unit bonding time, I actually flipped the songbook and realised that I could sing and play a good number of "older" Christian songs,Jewish-like songs like "Sing Unto the Lord", "El Shaddai", "Jehovah Jireh","When the Spirit of the Lord", "Be Thou My Vision"...just to name a few...

Okay la....enough of stuff to remind myself of my age...heheh will post the pics that I took last Sat at the NDP Preview soon..:P

English Content Upgrading Exemption Test

Dear me! Sat for a terrible paper yesterday at school! wah..its actually an exemption test whereby to test students on the technical aspects of grammar. Successful candidates who cleared the paper can opt not to sit for the module or do another round of testing...

I went through a gruelling 45 minutes of the test and have really felt terrible from the moment I opened the script..examples of the questions given(From what I can remember la...dun quote me wor...it's that scary!!)

Question:In the phrase "The Sun's visible surface", the head of the phrase is:

A) The C)The Sun
B) Sun D) visible surface

Or how about this?

Question: In line 3 the phrase "For some time after the hurricane," is NOT n adverbial clause because it is used as a/an

A)complement to the noun phrase "hurricane"
B)preposition to the next clause
C)noun phrase
D)subjugate conjunction

Question: Which of the following phrases is passive?

A)is complicated C) had
B)is produced D) had called

Question:Which of the following is true in Line 2-3 in Text 1?

A)"Although (line 2)and "Like" (line 3) belong to the same classifcation of words because they are linking two facts together.
B)"Although (line 2) and "Like" (line 3)belong to the same classification of words because they are comparative in nature.
C)"Although" and "Like" belong to two different family of words because the former is used as a comparative whereas the latter is used as an adverbial which precedes a noun phrase.
D)"Although" and "Like" belong to two different family of words because the former is used as a verb linking two sentences whereas the latter is used a preposition which links up facts related to the subject.

eh? Greek to me lei....it really seemed like forever for me when I really had to try to figure out what does an "adverbial clause" mean or "conjuction" or "preposition phrase", or "embedded noun phrase".
Din really prepare for it but only a brief glance through the grammar book that my colleague had lent me... How do teach English like that?

Can really identify with the kids now when i asked them to check their exam papers and they could not check....why? because they don't even know what they are checking!! they could not even understand or answer the questions!! hahaa....get a taste of my own medicine!!

It's next week..Anyone interested?

FRESHIE again! Third Day...

This is so cool...was telling CC that we are freshies again! It's great to be back in school again studying despite just barely one year ago I was dying to get out of school now back at NTU canteen A.

One year...changing jobs in and out of them and in the process..certainly trusting God for the provision that I needed. Somehow the providence just came...to go for a missions trip in March, paying for the Church Camp and all...wow simply amazing....

Got off the familiar Bus 179 at the slope up Canteen A, went straight to buy my favourite 35 cents Kopi...they serve good coffee okay? All the aunties were like "You are back!!!" Had hung out too often during my undergrad days at the Canteen heee all the aunties all recognise me le..:P heee, felt like going back home. This is some place I know deep inside I would always think of when i recall on the old days..

Had Teambonding on the first day and yes, its orientation revisited...aiyee made to clear many station games with our groups.crawl on the floor, clear obstacles, team cheers...etc Apparently they had devised a brilliant way to make sure that you showed up for it....they had strategically grouped everyone according to their project mates for this particular module Group Endeavours Service Learning. aiyee.. you "zhao" you would not know who's your group mates...:P

Met a lot of old friends, you know there are some names you associate yourself at different stages of time and you know certain monikers like your Chinese name only surface from before circa 1995!!

"Qinxin!!!"

I was shocked, to hear this girl calling out to me..Yeu Pei, I had not met her for a good 10-11 years since NYGH days!! She din change much and it was good to reminisce about the old days with her and also saw more secondary school friends, all of us busy catching up....along the way met more ppl, from the friends I had met during my relief teaching stint at Compassvale Sec School..all of us, gathered back again at NIE...really feel like a good reunion.

Been praying to ask God whether I should drop my subject specialisation and do music as a teaching subject. Somehow, the option to opt out of the two subject specialisation did not seem too attractive, I felt more rather that God was speaking me in another sense to teach people to worship God through the music ministry instead of merely teaching....after much praying.. I also knew the added stress of the music teachers in Primary schools nowadays and knew that its really up to the school if they want to allocate you to teach Music....as long as you got the heart, you can offer your services and interests to the school...

Really hope that this is correct decision to make... did remember before that the teacher in charge of the music CCA in my contract teachig school wanted me to help teach music in the CCA if I ever get posted back...cos in the subject specialisation, I would be trained to teach higher levels not just the lower primary levels. I wanted to expose myself to teach across the levels not just focused on a particular level of students..

The directive from God was rather getting clearer, that He needs me to help lead people into worshipping in their skills in the various instruments, i hope this means strings... Well this could be teaching in a sense too..hmmm am keeping my fingers crossed.

Touching people's hearts through worship unto God is a whole new perspective to me...dun know whether I can fit into the shoes that God wanted me to fill...still feel inadequate though...

21st July 2006- Racial Harmony Day at Maris Stella! Starting NIE on Monday...:P

Me kapok a Sari that day from my sis and with the help of my dear friend Hazlina dressed up like an Indian!
Me and the other contract teachers, Xiao Xuan, Jonathan all laughed ourselves silly in the staff room posing with the shots...

The kids all giggles when I entered the class,"Miss Tham You look funny!!"... took many other crazy shots though..that's it...the end of my contract teaching stint in Maris Stella...:)

Stayed in school and packed and marked till around 430 to nearly 5!!

I had a really wonderful time in this school, certainly grew in the knowledge of how to handle boys and greater dependency on God!! haha...:) See where God leads la..maybe I will come back wor...:P

My Lord - Demo Part 1

Can't believe it on how fast time flies!
Found an old scrap notebook which I had kept when I was in NTU days, wah, nostalgia!
All the sowing plans, all the study plans that I had found in that book, my notes on how to improve my studies, my shepherding teachings.....plus plus this other song, half finished "The Lord Reigns" inside! I have actually written the "Tau geh" somewhere, must be lost in the sea of paper in my room or crashed with my old comp...:P
I remember those days when I would pull out the guitar and just write and write songs....heee..time to revive that sigh..IF i have the time..

Today this song came to my head and STUCK..

I have recovered Lord! I have recovered! When I was on my way to school today then I realised that my focus was no longer on that pain and that hurt anymore but a renewed sense of joy! This must be what they say when the Lord puts a new song in your heart! My soul is rejoicing at the knowledge that the Lord God loves me and cares for me...not a cliche way of writing but I really feel that freedom.
Today is also the last day (really this time round) at Maris Stella Pri and I am going to miss the boys so so so much!

New steps to take, new beginning, new lessons learnt, another milestone in my life is starting soon...:)

This song stems out from the gratefulness and gladness from the deep recesses of my heart. The release I felt when I laid all my hurts, burdens and struggles at Jesus' feet. Although I know that when I look back at this period of time, this darkness, this valley of doubt , a shadow of it will always linger, but I know, with God's love, things can only get better from now on! :)Thank you guys for bearing with me...sisters, gimme a squeeze on the arm when you see me okay? :) so when the song came, I took out that trusty O scapbook and wrote and wrote...

Here is the song, draft la, recorded it in my mp3 player, will upload it soon...;)

My Lord

Verse:

My Lord Jesus, I found joy when I found You!

My Lord Jesus, standing firm, Your word so true!

My Lord Jesus carried me from depths of shadow

My Lord Jesus, strengthened me from all my sorrow...

Bridge:

My soul is lifted, My eyes are on You

My voice is singing, all praise upon You

My hearts contains the overflowing of Your Love...

Chorus:

I will praise You, My Lord!

Praise You the King of my heart!

I bring glory, I bring praise to You who reigns!

I will praise You, My Lord!

Praise You as I follow Your word

You speak truths, You speak freedom to my life...

(Repeat Verse)

Received the date..25th August 2006

Here I am again, this is another round of the Violin Exam... am taking the Grade Exam again with all the young kiddos in the studio..

God brought me through this period last year, although I had little sleep and practice, His grace was WONDERFUL and SUFFICIENT for me. Need that same grace now...exam pieces are definitely more difficult and my time is getting more and more tight..no time to pracice..so scary....

This would be a time again where my emotions and finances and definitely trust in God will be heavily tested.. stress levels were high yesterday and I had tossed and turned in bed till 4 plus yesterday..will I be able to make it this time?

Just finished practicing on Anthony only the scales and it took me already one plus hour..the pieces all took about one plus hour each to iron out too...waaaah...

Praying hard now...Please be with me Lord!

It's really a good time of praise and worship :)

What have I learnt from teaching in a boys' school...

Not exactly like a Billboard Top 100 hits but I am pretty sure that it will soon reach that some day...have started teaching in the school since March 23rd...wow....am amazed by what I learnt and what I have personally been experiencing in the school...shall name some interesting finds...Here are my Top 7:

BOYS - What I thought I knew....

1) Being a teacher in a mission school, you are deemed to be religious. Kids will come up to you and ask you about Bible stories and about God. I had one boy dragging his poor friend to me accusing him, and very indignant,"Teacher, you know what? He DON'T believe in GOD!!" (eyes wide open in shock)..

2) You are a part time mother in classes, whether you want or not. In my two months plus stint in the boy's school, I have tied numerous shoe laces, helped a small boy put on his shoes and socks after he started sobbing, wiped up a boy's puke, gave plasters for a particular grazed knee, help comfort a boy who swallowed his baby tooth and another who had a loose tooth, listened to numerous stories how they spend their weekends, helped looked after their wallets, held a few boys' hands when they were feeling lost, comfort a few more crying ones...well you get the idea...

3)You suddenly developed a penchant for collecting things. You go in on the first day of school, you tell yourself, aiyah, I am a new teacher...nothing much to collect also mah...in my stint there, I have amassed at least 20 plus pens and pencils, erasers or what's left of them after being scrapped into bits by the boys, their soccer balls, their basketballs, satay sticks, rulers, flying rubberbands, Pokemon cards, offending papers with scraps of vulgarities, staple pins twisted into weapons of destruction to be used in class, one green wriggly little caterpillar...hahah the boys are very creative I tell you.

4) They can be very sweet and half absolutely have a big heart who do not remember scoldings. They help you carry your things when they see you struggling, take water for you when you are sweating in the hot sun, come up to you ..and "teh" you, sweet talk starts young from the age of 7. One moment you are fuming and lashing at them, the other moment, you see them running to you waving" Miss Tham, Miss Tham, Miss Tham!!" They still draw cute things and even make handicrafts for you. Have been kissed by two lil ones last term when they thought that I would be leaving then.

5)Boys will be boys. They love to play with things that they had created, paper aeroplanes, are very good at building fantastic structures that you never imagined. Still a kid la, they love cute stickers on their papers even though you think to yourself boys should be more garang. They love robots and dota, Maple Story and are very good at Maths and IT. Neat handwriting is a 1 or 2 in 40 ratio. They love running. Absolutely. They really sweat it all out during break time and after school... When it comes to fighting, you betta be there to quickly pull them apart...

6)They love videos and learn really fast visually. They can remember particular diagrams and videos which was shown to them weeks ago and put them into practice, oh yeah, pray hard that the videos are not the fighting ones...haha

7)You definitely pray much more.

When days are long and work is dreary...

Hot hot days in the classroom, losing my voice big time..think i developed larygnitis, my voice really cracked lei...oh gosh, please heal me Lord!!..These days I have been jamming quite a few worship CDs ...just seeking that peace that I so long desired, noises built up all around me, my kids in class, the war that is going on in my head....seeking that peace....

On days like these, I really "soak" myself in worship unto the Lord...its when down times I know i should hold on all the more to Adonai. hahah the other side of my character is seeping out....and according to my shep hahah ..this has affected some people in my group...I look so scary ah? wahahah i chuckle to myself..no la not the evil twin Rac...just slightly more contemplative, not wanting to be a joker all the time, shouldn't I?

Pride? A battle of not wanting to let my defences down? Protection against myself? I am not sure...but one thing I am very certain....I hope I have not hurt anyone, cos I just want some quiet moments...not that I am against anyone wor...
Bear with me guys...

Bought two albums recently, Paul Baloche "A Greater Song" and Philips, Criag and Dean "The Ultimate Collection" ..very good buys....think one of the songs which I learnt last Wed when I attended Paul Baloche's workshop is this "I will Boast" very catchy and nice tune...that stucks in my head...Indeed, I will boast of the Lord my God alone...from Psalms...
Something that Paul shared that touched me was his simple humility towards just wanting to serve God and for His people to come to worship God. I was so touched by that workshop, really lifted my spirits up many many notches...Reading from the book of Psalms, the words of the song just flowed from his mouth as exhibited a lifestyle of worship unto the Lord....okay la..back to my marking...:P

Covenant Friendships, Love and Acceptance....Kawan came and went Melaka 8-11th June 2006

Really felt awful, this has been an awful week...sad to say that for once I was really struggling to pack up all my luggage for the journey with the heavy load I had already heaped onto my shoulders throughout the weeks that passed..What happened to the joy that I always anticipate in the annual camp?

Something God told me that made me start filling that duffel bag with my clothes for the camp...."
Rachel, PEARLS Rachel...why not those pearls that you hold on to, that you claim your own......PEARLS my dear Rachel...."

I had tossed and turned the whole night this imagery of pearls playing in my head...why God? Really God?

This is tough..but I have to face it no matter how hard it is...

It started with already a saga early in the morning of departure to Malacca. We were in a cab with all the "Kang-sters" Poy, Joe, CC and me, we had packed the taxi car boot with our luggage, but when we went down the cab, the vanguard sheet which CC had painstakingly drawn which proudly displays our CG name, was left on the cab! Our dear CL was feeling quite bad.. so we called up the cab company and thank God for wonderful service and angels in our midst...Everyone started digging into their wallets to contribute for the fare for the driver to turn back with the lost treasure..coins, notes.....with every bit we manage to come up with some money...this is truly what I call a FAMILY...

The cab driver found the vanguard sheet, came back with it and din charge us single cent!! She had already started the meter from where she was to Newton Food Centre...we are all so so so so touched....That's already Blessing No 1 from God!! :)

In my mind, war is already taking place, remembering CC's words, she had caught me staring in space for a few weeks already...

"Rachel...take CAPTIVE (grabs into imaginery thought pattern from my head) and make it obedient to Christ! (2 Cor 10:5)"

She was so right, I have been escaping truths for as long as I could remember but this camp is so different...Although we had shorter teachings, God really impacted me so much...the teaching i learnt..the more I tried to run away from the truth..God humbled me there and made me face Him...I can only turn to Him...I can only seek Him and hold on to Him....There wasn't a single day in the camp where i was not made to face the feelings and the truths that God was trying to speak to me..there wasn't a single day where my eyes are dry...

Covenant Friendships ~ I realised the depth of LOVE. It is a decision based on truths, decision to build strong and deep friendships, its not on feelings alone.

Convenant ~ Conformity with God's character and attributes.

I could not really speak up throughout the whole camp, the load however with God's loving grace was slowly lifted up, and put at His feet...

My dearest sisters who were with me throughout the whole camp...

Mingzhu, a quiet support for me who stayed up and waited for me during the nights when I had to be out late rehearsing for Kawan Showcase and my slot for worship. Thanks Gal! You were there listening to my complains ahahah these past 3 days ... really a great listener and comfort! May our friendship grow much deeper...:)

CC - really "ma2 fan2 ni3 le4" all the nights you spent making sure that I am okay, checking up on whether I am sleeping well...eheheh well I DID go the beach after all! No la....din "siam" any teachings wor..wahahah..

Kim - My prayer support. Thanks for being there, a shoulder to cry on and to hug. Thanks for sharing my sadness for that period of time. There was really uplifting when we prayed together at the point when Pastor Jeff told us to "release forgiveness". Can't thank God enough for your advice and for simply being there...it's not easy I know haha..paisei wor ..me keep spilling coffee on you wor! 3 times le! :P

Jeannie and Sarah "Princess" Lau ~ What can I say! You two ROCK!!! yeah? I love you two! For all the sneak-outs and rendezvous that we three painstakingly tried to plan..wahahah we made it to the BEACH! That morning was simply refreshing....Got my perspectives back on track with God. THanks for being the friends who would know and understand my quirks and nonsense and really for simply really wonderful sisters.
I believe Ecc 3:2 comes alive when I am with you all... waaaaah....

Fenny~ My great confidante...thanks for putting sense back to me and help me to be strong...what are WAM practices without you? heee For all the invaluable advice and prayers, your presence is a source of strength for me too in this camp.

For all the dear brothers,

Poy, Cheng, Joe, Jason, and Law, Guang Rong.....

Poy and Cheng, the resident jokers, never fail to brighten up our mornings with your jokes and laughter....

Poy, I believe that we are not going to play "zhong ji mi ma" for a very very VERY long time...hahah thanks for being such a fatherly figure in our group...we are so blessed to have you...

Guang Rong ~ You gave a new defination to being "well-versed in martial arts

Jason, Joe and Law, you guys are amazing! When you chose to go all out for God! What an impact you all made at the Kawan Showcase! Can you believe it? People are still talking about your "star qualities" that day! OUR muscle man - Joe, our supermodel - Jason and our Idol star - Law! *Rac catcalls~ Pheeeeyuuuuweeee!*

It's so amazing, to see all of your zeal to learn from the Word really encourages me a lot...I am really sure you guys will go far....:)
You guys really add a lot of joy and spice to our group! Eh, pray for more sisters lei....

FOR dear LORD JESUS, thank YOU Lord for lifting me up, You healed and saved me at the time when I nearly collapsed on stage, You were the only ONE I could hold on to at that time and You lifted my heart literally. Your awesomeness and amazing power is clearly evident to me on that day. Thanks for pulling me back from shear pain. You are good Lord and Your name is a source of comfort to me through this camp..its simply wonderful!

O Lord, help me to rest in You, rest in Your loving arms, find strength. I pray for all the relationships that I have and I pray that I would learn to build covenantal friendships with people around me. Help me to appreciate the people around me more too..

Covenant Friendships = Love + Acceptance

Back on Pearls...

I was reminded of this story where a little girl would hold on to her pair of very precious but "toy" pearl necklace. Every day in and out, she would wear the pearls and carry them around.

One fine day, her dad made her and offer,
" If you love me my dear, please give me your pearls."

"NO! Dad,they are really pretty and I love them..."

The father tried this again for the next few nights until the little one finally relented, sad to see her father so dejected, she tore away from her precious,

"There you go Dad, these are my pearls, I LOVE YOU DAD!"

She woke up the next day only to find beside her bed, a set of beautiful real pearls...

Let go, God will NEVER shortchange you....

The things which you hold on dearly...how far would you let go?

Find this rather amusing..I am in the midst of "collecting" all my kid's and detractor's things over this past two months in Maris Stella Pri School..I am personally amazed at how God showed me the way the boys react to things would actually be a life lesson to me.

It just occured to me after talking to God about it. I would have to clear out my drawers soon and be shifting my workstation and to my stock taking account, to date, I have collected, satay sticks, erasers, lotsa pens, Pokemon cards, bookmarks, torchlight, my prized soccer ball and not to mention a green wriggly little fellow..which I hope is worming around safely in the school garden...and now the latest craze in the classroom scene ladies and gentlemen is the RUBBER BANDS. Flashes of red and yellow will spring across the room when you are talking in class...took a bag of them today...:)

The boys actually place great value in these little things. I would be amazed at how they would brawl and cry when their things are removed from them, how they would want to hold on to them so tightly that they hope that the teacher would be lenient and be nice to them. One boy cried running after me after class for me to return his precious notebook in which he wrote, about the "special" powers that he and his friends has accumulated over the months of "training". Today I did something drastic..threw a boy's shoe outta the door!I am amazed at the stories that I heard about the boys doing business selling all the thigns that they had collected to earn profit...

The things we hold on to so tightly...One by one as I had collected the things from the boys, I had harboured this hope that they would listen and do well in their work. Pretty like what God wants me to do in many of things that my little possessions...how i still like a little child sometimes..holding on to my pride, my prized little erasers and satay sticks of requests from God. God would want to bless us with many gifts ...but in the process...there must be a spiritual "pruning" "He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be more fruitful."John 15:2

Many times i come begging at God's feet...do You have to take that away from me? Do you have to really give it to You God? Do I have to surrender that little thought that i hold on to ? All this reasoning just because we want something from God and when He demands that we give it all to Him...it becomes really tough...I wrestle with God, each struggle i realised that the tear in my heart or soul becomes much deeper and hurt more...it was so much easier to simply let go to God..The kids who struggle with me did not just get hurt emotionally themselves, i realise that I do get hurt its really a tight feeling when the kid makes you angry at times, then it dawned upon me God is hurt too when i struggle with such animosity over my rights He wants to give the best..today another deeper understanding of His love for me...

Remembering also the song that we had sang at CG,

Give them all, Give them all , Give them all to Jesus,
Shattered dreams and wounded hearts and broken toys,
Give them all, Give them all, Give them all to Jesus,
He'd turn your sorrow into JOY!!

The fishing line would have to be released further in order to "get bigger fish" as what the Chinese always say..but GOD asks for complete surrender, replete at His feet...How much faith do I hold right now to let go, really let go of that fishing line, that eraser of value, that "Pokemon Card" of my heart?

Lord, I pray, burn it deep and take all of me Lord! That last stubborn stronghold of my pride, my emotions, my wants and needs i want to give it to You...help me dear Lord! It's Your Grace, that I am here...Help me not to over ask for more...I want to experience this joy, this freedom that comes from complete surrender at Your feet...The deeper in love, the deeper aspects of my heart, Lord I pray you touch me there too..thank You Lord for all You'd have done.....:)

It's really amazing..how simple everyday things like that should help me see God in the lives of those kids...God takes and He blesses us back so manyfold in return...:)

Tucking away the strands of stray rubber bands in the drawer..:0) Yupps there's always a round 2 in this wrestle tomorrow....

Sarawak Trip 28th April to 1st May 2006

Went for a good long weekend getaway during this weekend hols over the Labour day PH.
What sparked off from a casual MSN one fine day in the staff room with Jeannie made me suggest that...why not we both pay Ms Lau a visit...wahahah

We have known Ms Lau for so long but have never got down to her place...guess we are all hyped up...kudos to Jeannie..we have our airplane tickets and schedule planned out within a few days...she can be a planner or scheduler...ever thought of that?
heheh....

Both of us decided to take Silk Air after much discussion cos if we travel by budget..we have to take to Senai Airport which is 3 hours from Singapore..then fly by Air Asia...i gave a "No, No" sign to Jeannie...aiyoh...just pay more a bit and fly la....

Our first trip to Sarawak...Sarah is back for her annual retreat home...:) miss her wor......so excited also..me have been wheezing and coughing for the past week...did not really recover...from my last entry...i had left the stadium of screaming boys at Hougang...din have time to change outta my sports attire and went straight to the airport....very unglam...hmmmm...

I thank God for such sweet friends like Sarah and Jeannie ever since the NTU days. We 3 were like in the same group for a good 1 and half years...things din really work out at first for me.. I was rather off..then slowly as I joined the group more ..I was attracted to the bubbly nature of Sarah and the quietness of Jeannie...hahah guessed we clicked..:) We started to serve together...even at one point of time Sarah and me were Jeannie's core team. Could see how we three were put into 3 different Sub D after NTU....NG1, NG5 and NG14..wah....MSN i tell you is a very powerful tool..we would chat and catch up all those nitty gritty things that simply amuses us day in and day out...

I was rather intrigued by Sarah..our dearest Princess...haah how she is brought up..her Christian parents and of course...her younger brother....we were all so piqued and excited to meet her family....:P

Lotsa good food wonderful break

Without You

I remember i was a huge fan of Mariah Carey back in 1994, my sec school times to around JC days...that was when she was still married to Tommy Mottola the Sony Label boss who had focused her earlier albums more on vocals than her looks...

Those days she was really HUGE and popular, I remember myself as a teenager, recording all the music videos on TV and there was this series of TV specials on stars which i recorded everyweek..think i must have played the tape over and over and over again so many times....found this video "Without You" recorded in the famous Madison Square Garden. I really think she was really pretty last time! :) 8 ocvtave vocal range...she was in the ranks of "diva" together with Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson...oh yeah those 80s to 90s time...:P

Its one of my personal favourites from the album Music Box...hehe, most of you all could remember hits like Hero, Dreamlover,I'll be There (~"Just call my name and I'll be there...") and of course All I want for Christmas...these days RnB is in the rage...She does not sing like she used to anymore.

Do enjoy the video with me...:)

Touched by a......10-year old!!

28th April 2006-Sports Day!!

Was totally touched today....its a short day today as the kids are already in their "off" mood for the long weekend for the Labour Day holiday. I had to take some boys in their Maths lesson today..as usual, there's something about boys and their ego...doesn't seem to change with AGE eh? Some kids gave me trouble again, a group of about 6-7 were writing lewd stuff on paper and passing them around giggling and laughing...and simply refused to OWN UP that they have done wrong..

The form teacher and me got down to "decipher" the code, "Who wrote this line?" "Write your name beside that line!!" But as always...no one dared to admit himself writing the vulgarities. We questioned this group of boys together with the form for a good 45 minutes!! Until one boy finally broke down and cried!!

Released them to go home to get their stuff, while i was still fuming..had to catch a plane to Sarawak that evening rushed to get my luggage and passport.

Arrived at scorching hot Hougang Stadium at 1235pm and was assigned CROWD CONTROL. Imagine with me ppl, how to you do CROWD CONTROL with a group of noisy Secondary and Primary school boys, all excited for the Sports Day? Aiyoh!!!! I met the the boy who was crying earlier on. To my surprise, he was waving his hands around," Miss Tham, Miss Tham, MISS THAM!!!" I was really surprised....just barely a few hours ago, I was there scolding you and you were crying...now you are welcoming me??

Learnt another hard lesson that day, how kids, especially boys could be so forgiving, chinese say" Bu2 Ji4 Chou2". My heart was still feeling awful from the lecture that i had given them..WOW....this is really a good lesson for me..

Was queueing up for the ice milo (rem those lil green coupons that we used to get when we were in pri sch?) this sweet little scout from the notorious class in my earlier post, came up to me,(the scouts have to first give up their Milo to teachers first) my fellow teacher standing beside me reached out to take the cup, but he went "Miss Tham only..." AWWWwwwwwwww..... i really could not stop smiling!!!!

Lord, my heart is won over by these 10 year olds!!!

More pics from the Easter Services

Some pics from the Easter Services 15th-16th April 2006

My first formal Keyboard lessons

Last Saturday...i finally tried my hands on playing on a piano for REAL!!
It was really farnie....Even though last time my mum had taught me how to play when i was small...i realised that I had learnt how to play last time by MEMORISING the numbers on top of the notes! recognise the pattern mah...so its a short-cut, cheater bug kinda method..wahahah...For example, "1-2-3-4-5 5-4-6-3-2" it's so easy with numbers!!

So when Fenny gave me a first formal lesson i was like my fingers were so clumsy!! I din know how to play a proper C major scale!! So i tried the keys on the right hand..its really fine actually..then repeat with the left hand only ah..no problem....then ah combined two hands together...kalang kapok....super stuck fingers...i was so stuck with changing fingers that i was like repeating to my self "so left hand must change at 5th finger then right hand must change at 3rd finger!!! ARGHHHH"

Struggled and toiled at the keyboard....for a full one hour...phew....learnt a lot..managed to finish one scale..very slow la of course.....did appreggios, did finger exercises....looking forward to become a female "MAKSIM"??? woo hooo....

Okay...dreaming again...looking more to our caregroup realising our dream of having a CG band eh? Sandy on guitars, wils on Keyboard, we just need a drummers and vocalists!! :)

Little hands, Little feet

Little hands, that raise up in the air,
Little feet that go stamping at attention when they see you.
Little mouths that call out very sweetly to your name,
Little tune that comes from the little song,
From bored little fellows at the back of the classroom...

Little grubby hands, that hold sharpened cartoon pencils,
Scribbling on crumbled worksheets for you to mark.
Little feet that come scrambling at you when you call their names...
Little boys who rest against your lap, wanting your attention even when you are scolding them...

Little eyes that look eagerly at you for you to praise them and pat their head.
Little voices that ring beautifully at their morning prayers every day..
Little children that testify of God's love, a vision of sweetness and joy..
Little praises that come forth from little boys singing of God's love during music lessons...
Little boys, Little in stature, God's little children...making a huge impact within me...

My Pri 1 Kids..cute right? :)

Easter Services 15th-16th April 2006

Last week has got to be one of the busiest weeks of this year yet...

First time i played for a record number of 6 services! It's really touching to see so many ppl coming to know Christ through the services...We witnessed many lives coming again to dedicate their life to Christ, most of them, broken and teary faced..a really heart warming scene from the stage..one word..simply BEAUTIFUL. I was rather stressed on Sunday that I actually sprang up at 430am with the song "We all bow down" ringing in my ears!! I went "Huh, we are singing that song now ah?" I looked at the watch...oh man 430am..could not go back to sleep after that...

The week which they called Holy Week is certainly wonderful...again witnessed the marvellous work of the Lord.

I had lesson observations and lots of things to do in school...meetings and workshops are never ending...and one day i really dread is really Thursday, where i would be asked to go to this really infamous class in the school....the boys are SCARY..

You have no form of ORGANISATION in the class...you think ten-year olds can't do u much harm...woo hooo...serious understatement of the year! This is a class with a few kids with ADHD...and I teach them Art...when you have Art on the last two periods of the week, ALL HELL WILL BREAK LOOSE. Dunno what it is with glue..the last few sessions when I taught them on how to make paper marche masks, they were seriously playing with the glue and paints.... they like to paint each other with the glue and unto their white uniform mind you....guess boys will be boys...sigh...remember on one occassion i innocently let one boy out to "wash his hands" woo hoo you know what he did? He was rather short but he manged to jump and reach for the canteen metal shutters and pull it down! Our art room is near the canteen you see.....sigh..

So this week i decided to do something different..i will fast and pray for the kids. Something I have not done also...I wanted to seek the Lord also in guiding me and praying for my friends and parents also to hopefully come to know God this Easter.
It was really a MIRACLE. Thursday came, i dread going to the class...its lesson observation...i was thinking to myself.."Oh man, its paints again..." What I actually saw really humbled me there...Could really witnessed how the Holy Spirit was really moving, and calming the kids down...the kids was so quiet!!! They were queueing up nicely in two rows, no noise at all...its a miracle... i kept thanking God from the bottom of my heart..to all teachers out there reading this.. you would know that classroom management is essential in any observation...how can u conduct a class when the whole group is simply "OFF"?

The lesson went by so smoothly..they were so attentive and cooperative..even the normal guys who gave me trouble were so quiet...they were actually painting and doing work without much instruction! I was so touched I kept wanting to smile! Remember that my cooperating teacher told me NOT TO SMILE at all situations...heheh that's not a problem at all..those who know me know that I have a "chao been" (hokkien). Thank God for His marvelous work in the kids that week...

Another Thanksgiving point is really we witnessed our friends, Poy's friend and Wilson coming to know God through the Easter Service! We were all so touched.. guess Sandy you must be so ecstatic!

We wanted to create a powerpoint presentation for Wilson for his 23rd birthday last year...but it was very belated as I was always involved in special events...I apologise for that....:(
Finally squeezed in some time to complete the powerpoint for Wilz this week....was rummaging through my old files..i have been constantly receiving nice powerpoint slides from friends about the love of God, and as I was praying while making the powerpoint..I told God also that I really hope that He would lead me to create one presentation that would really touch Wilz heart.

Chanced upon this old file in my comp....decided to use the last few slides for the powerpoint presentation. Must really affirm and pat Sandy many times on the back..she provided me with the list of pictures and songs that Wilz likes..even writing and doing up the song and recording for him! It's so touching!! Later CC told me that its the exact same file that Wilz had sent us...I had not really seen the file that Wilz sent, so when CC saw the slides in the files she was excited too... it was certainly no coincidence..really could see how God really wants those slides in the presentation....! How marvelous that God crafted and put together the presentation...that He wanted it to be shown at the correct time...His perfect time...:)

Yi4 Nian2 Duo1 Le4......the recording of the song keeps ringing in my ears till this day...

Lord, we treasure this gift of a new life that You have given us...its not about the number of lives that was changed...but it was certainly the process and how You made each of us grow to see the value of the lives that are renewed in the Lord. This was certainly a long long journey..but i am glad that we went through it...could really appreciate the strengthening of our faith and how Your brought us through also this experience, the heart transformation, learning to wait upon the stillness of Your voice...and the many times we cried out in sheer desperation that Lord we need YOU. Lord, You bonded the group closer together and everyone was really actively doing their part also in seeing the new lives to be won over for the Lord Jesus!

Thank YOU for this wonderful Easter...its really a beautiful time for all of us...May we grow stronger in love for one another in the group and a heart burden for the friends who are yet to know You...

Psalm 71:3

"Be my rock of refuge,
to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
for You are my rock and my fortress..."

O Lord, help me to face myself, help me to face myself and detest sins more. Lord, help me to marvel at Your work in the lives of the people around me. Help me to lay down my fears, my rights to be always right, my heart to be increased and filled with Your love more. Help me to appreciate the beautiful creation, the wondrous song You put in my heart every morning, every new day. Lord, I love You and would honour You with my life, my heart and my mind. Make me pure before You O Lord!!

The kid in me - Star WARS exhibition 1st April 2006

Yeah call me a "ah-duh" to squeeze until the last moment before I finally drag myself down to Science Centre to watch the exhibition.

Really must thank Ling Ling who was so kind to give me one complimentary ticket..tried for weeks to ask ppl acc me go but very hard to get ppl down...hence decided to take the Mert ALL THE WAY to Jurong East...can really sing "Corrine May's It's a Long LONG Journey..all over again" It's really NTU days revisited...:)

Shall share some pics now..:)

I walked through the exhibition alone, snapping up the pictures...

Had great fun at this corner called the "Jedi Gym" where I tried out all the games that the "Jedi" has to undergo training for...the "Force" game where you can kill off opponents by waving your hand around...the reflex and balance game and the real cool one the mind-control game...:P

Love to go exhibitions..love to read up all the things that are on display...Any other Star Wars fans out there? :P
